I hope people remember that comparing Brown to other universities is difficult, since we’ve always had an S/NC option in past semesters that has left students with extenuating circumstances and reduced courseloads with few real grades. I believe that the school should make things mandatory S/NC for the sake of students who need a transcript for med. school etc, that explicitly states that Brown has made it mandatory. However, I think it’s only fair that students who have had past extenuating circumstances (that the university will be aware of looking at reduced courseloads, part deans notes, barely any grades in the past) should be permitted to petition to the university to take classes for grades in this situation, since they really need them.
