I think the new grading system is completely fair. Students who are displaced due to the events caused by COVID-19 or are experiencing some form of difficulty should just take their classes S/NC. If they explain their situation, I'm sure employers or grad programs will understand. It isn't fair to force everyone to have to take up universal pass/fail. For one, you don't know for sure what these grad programs think of it. As of right now, I've heard that Harvard medical school will accept classes taken under universal pass/fail as it is synonymous to mandatory pass/fail but this is only one grad program. Second, not every school has taken up this form of grading. Yea, it presents an even playing ground at Brown but we are also competing against students from other schools for jobs and positions in grad programs. You guys named a couple schools that took on universal pass/fail but that means nothing if not all schools are participating. Another point I would like to make is that other schools implemented universal pass/fail quick due to the way they handled the threats posed by COVID-19. However, Brown did a good job handling the threat. Students were able to petition to stay on campus and utilize Brown's resources if needed, unlike other schools that you guys love to compare Brown to. In addition to this, please stop saying that it's selfish to want to keep your grades. If you were still able to push through and finish with good grades through these hard times, employers and grad programs are more likely to want you. Also, you would be surprised by how many students affected by COVID-19 want to keep the current grading system in place including myself. We are used to having to work under tough conditions and this is just another challenge we are willing to face. I know this part is going to receive a lot of heat but I still want to say it. The more I listen to other people's opinions regarding what Brown should do regarding the grading system, the more I start to see that people pushing for this the most are just those who either weren't doing well this semester to begin with or are simply lazy and don't want to continue to have to work hard. I don't necessarily agree with this but I do feel that this is part of it. "
