In December 2019, the international health care community identified a new respiratory virus that has since been labeled 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Spread of coronavirus is correlated with circumstances of close and sustained contact with others who are infected with the virus. To date, elderly individuals and those with underlying chronic illness have been most impacted.

Brown University Health Services is following the current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations and is in ongoing communication with state and federal public health officials about management of the virus. At this time, there is no identified risk to members of the Brown community.

Out of caution, we recommend that any actively enrolled Brown student with a fever (defined as temperature above 100.4 F / 38 C), significant respiratory issues (cough, difficulty breathing) and travel to Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China (where the spread of 2019-nCoV originated) within the prior 14 days seek evaluation at Health Services. Faculty and staff should consult with their local primary care provider.

Campus medical providers and administrators are actively working with local health officials as well as monitoring national guidelines to ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of all campus members. The CDC currently recommends avoiding travel to the Wuhan region of China.

Influenza and similar viruses are most prevalent at this time of year. We would like to take this opportunity to remind the Brown community of standard recommendations to prevent infection spread including regular hand washing and use of hand sanitizer and covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.

We will continue to update the community as new information becomes available.

Wishing everyone a productive, healthy and fulfilling spring semester.
