TL;DR Please, even if it’s with good intentions, don’t speak for minorities/people struggling affected by the pandemic and their views on UP when you yourself are not in that position.

Honestly, as a low-income minority student in a terrible situation at the moment, I don’t love that there are several posts by people who have explicitly stated that they are not personally struggling/would personally benefit from UP but are supporting it because they feel that they’re speaking for those struggling/minorities/UFLI students. Perhaps it’s with good intentions, but please don’t speak for others. This makes those struggling and their opinions on UP seem like a homogenous monolith, when those are that speaking are not in that position. I am in a terrible position as a low-income international student back home in a developing country that’s struggling to cope. However, I would advocate for the default being mandatory pass fail with the option for individual students to petition for grades/have their grades uncovered, because I understand that people deserve a choice. (which is the closest thing other universities have done to UP)
