Where students once climbed onto the roof for an evening of soccer under the stars, where athletes huddled together to chat with their teammates during practices and navigated the track and courts, the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center has now become a primary gathering spot for the Brown community — in a very different way.
There, many University students and staff are learning to follow a set of equally spaced-out arrows along the floor and swab their nasal passages, instead of dribbling basketballs, as the University tallies positive and negative test results.
There have been five positive tests from 5,400 results that have come back thus far from Brown community members who have already initiated their asymptomatic testing at the OMAC or Brown’s second testing center, 1 Davol Square.
Over 6,000 University community members have received tests at the two locations from Aug. 24. through Sept. 1 as part of the academic year testing process, according to a Sept. 2 email from Executive Vice President for Planning and Policy Russell Carey ’91. To date, 6,375 University students, faculty and staff have enrolled in testing.
“While the low rate of positive asymptomatic tests is reassuring, it is by no means an indication that our individual or community vigilance with regard to health and safety measures should relax,” Carey wrote.
The University’s current testing process was built off of information gathered during the University’s summer testing pilot, which reported under five positive results from around 3,100 total tests, according to an Aug. 28 Today@Brown Announcement from Provost Richard Locke P’18 and Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Barbara Chernow ’79.
“We have worked hard to improve the test scheduling process, speed up turnaround times for test results, strengthen the process for delivering test results to participants, and refine the approach to the web-based screening survey through which participants report symptoms,” they wrote in the announcement summarizing summer testing results.
Still, due to the transition from randomized testing to required weekly or semiweekly testing, some testing participants had difficulties with the scheduling process over the past week. Some returning students mistakenly received emails, reviewed by The Herald, indicating that they had not followed testing and symptom tracking procedures and stated that if they did not remedy the alleged mistake, the matter would be “referred to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards and you may face disciplinary action.”
But Carey added that Verily, the company working with the University to manage testing logistics, has updated their system, mostly resolving this issue.
“The feedback we have received regarding the testing sites and testing process itself has been positive, and we have continued to make improvements based on participant feedback and suggestions,” Carey wrote.
Claire Miller ’21, who lives off-campus, shared such feedback about her experience registering for testing, which requires setting up an account on Verily’s website after receiving an email from Campus Life.
The directions were “super, super clear,” Miller said. “Honestly, I think they’re doing a really good job with the explanations. I was a little nervous when I went in just because I hadn’t done it before, but it was so organized.”
Upon arrival at the OMAC, students must follow arrows dotting the floor and stand at socially distanced spots while waiting in line for a temperature check before showing an ID to check-in. Staff then direct community members to private booths separated by black curtains, where health care personnel wearing long gowns, face shields, masks and gloves instruct them on how to administer the test.
For asymptomatic individuals, the University has opted for an “easier and significantly less uncomfortable” — yet comparably accurate — anterior nasal test that uses a swab and does not go as deep into the nose as the nasopharyngeal test, according to the Aug. 28 University statement.
Mia Santomauro ’21, who is also living off-campus, went in to receive their first test Aug. 24, the first day of academic-year COVID-19 testing at the OMAC, after it transitioned from a prior location on Meeting Street. Santomauro, who like Miller completed the entire process in around five minutes, said the process was “super easy,” and, given the vast space, it “wasn’t overly crowded.”
The University specifically chose the OMAC because it is spacious and well ventilated.
Verily will notify participants getting tested once or twice a week to schedule a subsequent test three days or one to two days, respectively, after their last test. In both cases, it is recommended that people space out their tests every three to four days.
“For the most part, the Broad Institute is turning around results within 24 hours of the sample arriving at the lab, so typically a day and a half after the test,” Carey wrote. Students who test positive will not be tested again for 90 days in accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The University is in the process of finalizing a dashboard to communicate collective and anonymized results with the public on its Healthy Brown website.

Materials Given to Providence-Area Undergraduate Students At the Start of Quiet Period
Description
An account of the resource
Images and scans of two packages of materials I received near the start of Quiet Period (during my second coronavirus test at the OMAC, 9/2/20.) Similar bags were distributed to all undergraduate students who were living in the Providence area and getting tested at around this time, although there seems to have been some variation in mask numbers, type, and quality.
The envelope labeled "Quiet Period Kit" contained a pamphlet titled "A Guide to Forming Your Pod," a pamphlet titled "Quiet Period Tips and Activities," six postcards, a poster titled "Stop the Spread of Germs," four Brown Takes Care stickers, and a box of colored pencils.
The plastic bag contained three cloth tie-on face masks, two four-ounce tubes of hand sanitizer, and a package of 50 alcohol wipes.

We have compiled a robust list of opportunities for remote engagement throughout the quiet period (8/29-9/15) comprising over 200 events. These events are hosted by a variety of campus departments and student groups and are categorized by theme so you can search by the categories that are of most interest to you! While this programming is designed for students going through quiet period on campus, it is also a virtual kick off to the semester for all students and the Brown community.
The full event listing can be found in the BrownU app, which can be downloaded in the Apple App Store or through Google Play. If you already have the app downloaded, click on the person icon and switch your persona to Quiet Period to see the events. If you are downloading for the first time, the events will populate automatically for you.
The full event listing can also be found on the Student Activities Office website or by clicking the link below.
Please reach out to Joie_Steele@Brown.edu with any questions and a huge thank you to all who are hosting events during this time!

Amid a global pandemic that continues to create much uncertainty, many of us are thinking about what we can do to keep Brown and the families in our surrounding communities healthy and safe.
Brown is fortunate to have a strong community that believes deeply in caring for one another. From the earliest signs of the virus on campus last spring, students, faculty and staff at Brown have joined together in countless ways that reflect our values of conscience and caring to support the well-being of all those who work, study and live at Brown.
Based on these values, today we’re excited to announce “Brown Takes Care,” a community-wide effort to promote healthy behaviors during this pandemic.
Brown Takes Care is a prevention and education initiative coupled with a public health campaign, calling on each of us to embrace behaviors that support safe ways of working, socializing and living — whether it’s wearing a face covering on campus, maintaining 6 feet of distance while in line for food or mail, reimagining events, or finding new ways to connect with our friends and colleagues. We know that it will take each and every one of us exercising personal responsibility to confront COVID-19 and help Brown get to a place where we can be together safely in the months to come.
The campaign is designed as an inclusive and iterative community effort that directly engages students, faculty and staff as storytellers and influencers to promote the health practices that are essential. It brings together social media, video, web communications, training modules, community activities, student activity kits, signage and more, as well as a range of flexible templates and digital assets that Brown community members can use to bring the campaign to their cultural and identity groups, schools and departments, student organizations and sports teams, and social groups.
Brown Takes Care is uniquely Brown, having been created by students and staff working in close collaboration to root it firmly in our University values of care for one another. Brown Takes Care is designed to be easily adapted by on- and off-campus individuals and groups to evolve over time as new health guidance emerges. And it is a resource and a guide for amplifying best practices in individual ways that have meaning for each of us. Through the campaign, you are encouraged to share messages of prevention, tell your “Why I Care” stories, and show how you “Show Care by Doing” (wearing a mask, social distancing, cleaning, contact tracing). A new website makes downloadable resources available for Brown community members who want to use their voice and join the effort.
Visit the Brown Takes Care website at https://care.brown.edu to access digital tools and resources to share and adapt, including the following:
-- Healthy behaviors tips and messaging
-- Instagram stickers and GIFs
-- Snapchat geofilters, stickers and GIFs
-- Facebook profile frames
-- Digital poster backgrounds
-- Shareable cards for social media
-- Printable posters

This initiative is aligned and integrated with a holistic education and prevention effort across the University that includes Brown’s COVID-19 Campus Safety Policy; targeted online training modules for students, staff and faculty; a robust Testing & Tracing program; and a Student Commitment and Employee Acknowledgement that outline the responsibilities we have to ourselves and to one another to safeguard the well-being of our campus and our surrounding communities.
We want to thank the many, many individuals who have contributed their insights, creativity and expertise over the past months to help shape the Brown Takes Care effort. Thank you to the students, staff, faculty and administrators on the Prevention Education Subcommittee of the Healthy Fall 2020 Task Force, BWell interns and peer educators, undergraduate and graduate students who served on focus groups, and our colleagues in University Communications for their creative support.
In the era of COVID-19, it takes all of us working together to promote healthy behaviors for the sake of the people living and working around us. We hope you’ll join the Brown Takes Care effort. Contact browntakescare@brown.edu with questions and ideas for promoting a healthy Brown.
Sincerely,
Tanya Purdy, Director of BWell Health Promotion; Co-Chair, Prevention Education Subcommittee
Amy Nunn, Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Professor of Medicine; Co-Chair, Prevention Education Subcommittee

The University is carefully and thoughtfully considering the implications for non-degree visiting and exchange students, visiting faculty and researchers, and general visitors in its plans for the 2020-21 academic year.
Brown continues to value the contributions that Brown’s visiting and exchange programs bring to our academic community, but the pandemic and related public health actions have significant implications for successfully hosting non-degree visiting and exchange students, visiting faculty and researchers, and general visitors at Brown for the coming year. Consequently, the following temporary operational changes related to these visitors are in place for Fall 2020.
With the exception of those who are teaching in the Fall 2020 semester, or who are required for essential on-site research, lab and instructional duties:
-- Non-degree, visiting undergraduate, graduate and medical students (domestic and international) will not be allowed to attend in person in the Fall 2020 semester. (Note: This restriction does not apply to initiatives of the Brown-Tougaloo Partnership, undergraduate cross-registration programs with Wheaton College and RISD, graduate cross-registration programs with Harvard University and RISD, the Graduate School Exchange Scholar Program, or participants in the Employee Education Program or those approved for essential research.)
-- Visiting and adjunct faculty, and postdoctoral scholars who are teaching in the Fall and other individuals required for/involved in essential research should limit their time on campus to the hours required for classroom instruction office hours, and/or research activities if either are being held in person. The University has established detailed policies for on-campus operations for individuals with roles or work designated as “essential.” Visiting and adjunct faculty, postdoctoral scholars and other individuals required for/involved in essential research who are authorized to be on campus will need to comply with University safety policies regarding COVID-19, complete any required training related to those policies, and may be subject to mandatory testing for COVID-19 depending on the nature of their role and amount of time on campus. Amid the uncertainty of the pandemic, please be aware that Brown may need to make adjustments to these guidelines if public health guidance changes. For more information on designated essential roles, visiting and adjunct faculty, postdoctoral scholars and other individuals required for/involved in essential research should consult their department chair and dean, as well as the FAQ for Staff & Managers, and Faculty. (https://healthy.brown.edu/faq)
Requests for required essential on-campus research in the Fall 2020 semester by visiting and adjunct faculty, postdoctoral scholars and other individuals required for/involved in essential research must be submitted by the department chair/center director to the Research Continuity Committee in the Office of the Vice President for Research via the process outlined on the Resuming Research web page. (https://www.brown.edu/research/conducting-research-brown/resuming-research)
The University will continue to monitor the evolving circumstances and will provide further guidance and updates to visitors regarding the spring semester as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your cooperation and collaboration.
Sincerely,
Richard M. Locke
Provost
