Mandatory S/NC does more than enough to level the playing field without making a passing grade worthless. Universal Pass, though well intentioned, goes too far. If a student is unable to pass a class given that they are disproportionately affected by these circumstances, then they should receive an incomplete and be allowed to test out of it at a later time (hopefully after Brown gives them additional resources over the summer). Allowing students to pass regardless of if they truly understand the material of a class helps no one. It hurts the student further down the road and makes the passing grade of everyone else meaningless. I understand how difficult this situation is for everyone, and how it is much more difficult for some than for others. That being said, I believe mandatory s/nc is the best solution because it essentially does the same thing without having people that received a failing grade be shuttled through to higher level classes without the requisite foundations.
I do want to acknowledge that this perspective is coming from a position of privilege, and I am open to being more educated about the universal pass platform. "
