.The Mandatory S/NC folks have positioned themselves to make it seem like they are the ""morally just"" way to proceed with academics and smother any legitimate discussion about the merits of alternative grading schemes by effectively labeling those who disagree as not standing for the disadvantaged. Many people are afraid to state their preferences for alternatives to compulsory S/NC because they don't want to be labeled in another way due to campus cancel culture. The fact of the matter is that many folks don't agree with universal pass and many, in particular those who are disadvantaged, have made many valid claims against it. But nobody is comfortable speaking out, and the UP folks know that. There's really no way to argue against it without putting yourself in the crosshairs of folks who have painted themselves as those on the moral high ground. "
