During the COVID-19 crisis, the Library has remained fully committed to the teaching, learning, and research endeavors of the University and to the health and safety of Library staff and patrons. Given the rapidly evolving environment, we have also been in the position of updating our services in response to new government edicts and health-related best practices.

In light of Governor Raimondo’s announcement on March 29 requiring Rhode Island residents to remain home when possible, we will be transitioning our services to 100% remote beginning Saturday, April 4. Apart from basic facilities functions, no Library staff members will be asked to come to campus for work until the restriction is lifted.

During the critical period of transition from site-based to virtual instruction, the Library was glad to rotate a small number of staff members to scan physical material. However, now that we have made the transition, and in response to the governor’s new restrictions, SCANNING OF PHYSICAL ITEMS WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE AFTER FRIDAY, APRIL 3.

Any student and faculty member who needs a scan of physical material from the Rockefeller, Sciences, Orwig, and John Hay Libraries, and the Library Annex should submit the request at rock@brown.edu (general), hay@brown.edu (Special Collections), or through the link in the item record in Josiah, the online catalog, NO LATER THAN NOON ON FRIDAY, APRIL 3. We will be unable to fulfill scan requests after that time.

Library subject experts can help you locate digital material that is comparable to physical items.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests for resources available electronically will continue to be fulfilled.

In addition to the 2 million+ digital books and journals available through the Library’s subscriptions, we are excited to share a multitude of additional resources from partners who are making more content freely available online during the COVID-19 crisis.

A full slate of support remains available to all Brown students and faculty. Check our Library Service Updates during COVID-19 page (link below) frequently for helpful information, resources, and links.

As always, the Brown University Library is here for you. Be safe and well.
