Spicy take: the to-SNC-or-not-to-SNC debate is really just exposing the unethical nature of grading academic work. Those who’s families cannot support them, who never learned how to write an essay in their 50-person high school English class, who worry about affording food (let alone a 2 week supply) are set up to sink. Those with privilege and institutional knowledge get waterwings and swimming lessons, then get an A as a trophy to show off their hard earned (?) success. There are of course exceptions; there is no shortage of successful, brilliant, underprivileged people, nor a dearth of dedicated, hardworking silver-spooners. But this slight flexibility of the grading system is just enough to fool us into believing in meritocracy. Never forget that we are primarily graded on our privilege, not our ability, especially in a moment of global crisis."
