To the organizers of Universal Pass: I hope this isn't offending anyone, but have you considered advocating for mandatory S/NC instead? I completely supported Universal Pass before and still wish Brown could have done it - i do think that is the most equal option for all students. But I wonder if Brown would have an easier time accepting mandatory SNC since many other schools have done it already? Perhaps that would allow us to fight for some equality even if it is not UP?"</text>

Okay I am sorry if this has already been said but I imm just struggling to wrap my head around a few things and would (genuinely) love an explanation from the people that are against UP or against mandatory S/NC

1. How are we expected to worry about our grades in the middle of a global pandemic?

2. I understand that you think choice matters, but grades act as a reflection of how you prepared for/performed in a class comparable to your peers. When we're on campus, it may be fair to assume that grades are reflective of everyone's effort/skill. But when we're not, doesn't that defeat the point of grades as a concept? We don't have Brown as a neutralizing force so there isn't really a way for us to be graded that is an accurate reflection of what we did this semester?

3. So I've heard the argument that we don't know how grad schools will react to UP. However, is it not more understandable to the face of a med school that I was FORCED to take something S/NC rather than I choose to take a pre-med requirement? Like there are med schools who don't accept pre-med requirements if you took them pass/fail- if I opted to take Orgo 1 pass/fail because my circumstances at home were beyond extenuating, that could disqualify me for a lot of med schools right? Whereas, if Brown had a policy that accommodated everyone, wouldn't med schools have no choice but to not consider that as a foresight on my part??

4. I feel as though there are a LOT of students (myself included) who NEED to take a class pass/fail to remain sane but won't because it's an option and they are afraid that if grad schools see that they didn't have to, they will count It against them. Is there a different way I should be looking at this?"

I'm a pre-med, and I know many pre-meds are worried about how this semester will affect our prospects in applying. But gunning for A's despite having many opportunities at our fingertips to care for our community (starting with supporting universal pass to ensure that those of us who get hit hardest won't lose our future opportunities) is just plain sad. Med schools understand that even something as important as education takes a backseat in times like this (look at how clinical rotations have been suspended and 4th years are graduating early to work on the front lines). We do not need to be getting good grades right now. We do need to be giving a f*** about our peers."</text>

To the pre-meds who are against Universal Pass: If you're not willing to sacrifice your grades and maybe a little bit of your competitiveness as an applicant in order to help people who are suffering from a global pandemic, do you really expect med schools to believe that you'd be willing to put your life on the line one day to help your patients? Med schools aren't going to expect you to get A's in this time of crisis, but they WILL expect you to behave with compassion - compassion towards yourself, your peers, and your community. So relax, take a breath, and look at the big picture: there are traits that go into being a good doctor that don't show up in a GPA."</text>

I just don't understand what everyone is complaining about when it comes to the grades policy. Where's the logic in passing everyone in all their classes? That would lead to lower motivation across the entire student body and just decrease the net productivity or learning of the entire school, (is nobody familiar with the history of the Soviet Union?) I have read numerous arguments claiming that marginalized groups are/may be unable to work from home for various reasons, mostly citing that they may not have a reliable source of wifi. But applications to Brown are online, so literally every student had wifi before coming to the school. What changed?
Dean Zia is being as liberal and considerate as is reasonably possible by providing financial aid to students who present the need and extending the S/NC option if you really feel this shift to online learning will hinder your performance (although if anything, tests and homework have been made easier). In any case, its not as if classes got so much harder that our work up to this point in the semester should automatically pass us all. If we all got into Brown on our own merit then we should all be set to work for grades or S/NC and achieve a desirable outcome in each class.
The reason I felt compelled to write this post is because of the disgraceful way students are treating the faculty, who, believe it or not, are under a lot of pressure, too. The university does so much for some students, like offering the most generous financial aid packages, and I think asking for a universal pass is over-the-top, obnoxiously petty and unwarranted. I read someone say that people who agree with what the university is doing should not be going to this school, but if you think about it, it is the other way around."</text>
